Santa Barbara has a temperate climate that for most of the year is
perfect for outdoor activities. Most students bike to campus. UCSB has an extensive
system of bike paths and bike parking racks conveniently located next to all buildings
on campus. Santa Barbara County maintains its own system of bike paths that extends
throughout every neighborhood in Santa Barbara and Goleta as well as along the beach
and into the nearby mountains. There is a bike servicing center on campus. There
are bicycle shops in Isla Vista (next to campus), Goleta, and Santa Barbara where
you can buy both new and used bikes.
Santa Barbara County also has a public bus
service that connects the UCSB campus to the nearby airport, Isla Vista, Goleta,
and downtown Santa Barbara. The MTD Bus Line is free for registered students. Everyone
else pays $1.25 for a single ride, $10 for a 10-ride pass, and $41 for a 30-day
pass.
The Greyhound Bus Terminal in downtown Santa Barbara has direct and connecting
bus service to major towns and cities within California and throughout the US.
There are train stations in Goleta and Santa Barbara.
AMTRAK has direct local service
to Santa Maria and San Luis Obispo in the north and Carpentaria, Ventura, Oxnard,
Camarillo, and Los Angeles in the south. From the Santa Barbara train station you
can also catch a train that connects to service throughout California or across
the US.
The Santa Barbara Municipal Airport right next to campus has several national
airlines with direct flights to Los Angeles, Denver, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San
Francisco, and Seattle. From any of these airports it is easy to connect to flights
going to other US cities or to international destinations.
