Financial Requirements

  1. DETERMINING HOW MUCH MONEY IS NEEDED In order to obtain your I-20 or DS-2019 forms, you will need to send us proof that you have the minimum financial support to cover the costs of estimated tuition, fees and living expenses for one year for your degree level as listed below.

If you bring your spouse with you, you will need to add $4,000 to the above figure and $2,000 for each child that accompanies you to UCSB.

  2. DOCUMENTATION OF SUPPORT
    • Proof of funding may take the form of the Confidential Financial Statement or simply provide us with a bank or financial letter attested by a bank or financial institution. If you send a bank/financial letter, please pencil your name and your department's name on the letter.
    • Graduate students who receive a financial award can also send a copy of their department award letter to our office.
    • If you are financially sponsored by your government or another agency, please send a copy of your award letter.
    • NOTE: The financial statement is required only AFTER you have been admitted and notified UCSB that you are accepting UCSB's offer of admission.

  3. WHAT ELSE TO SEND
    • If you are currently in F-1 or J-1 status attending another U.S. college or university, you will also need to send us 1) your full name as it appears in your passport, 2) your major and 3) your current local living address (cannot be a P.O. Box) before we can issue the I-20 or DS-2019 form.
    • Inform us of the address to which your I-20 or DS-2019 should be sent. Documents will be mailed by regular air mail only.
    • If you are overseas and want your documents to be express mailed, you will have to make arrangements for the documents to be picked up at our office by the express mail carrier. If you have a relative/friend in the USA who can express mail your documents to you, we can mail the documents to them. Please advise us of your plans.
