J-1 Research Scholars and Professors are permitted to engage in short-term consultations
or lectures away from UCSB as long as their activity
- 1) is directly related to the objectives of the exchange visitor’s program
- 2)
is incidental to the exchange visitor’s primary program activities
- 3) will not delay
the completion date of the visitor’s program.
To apply for authorization to be paid for a short-term consultation, lecture or
conference, the exchange visitor should submit the following documents to OISS:
- A letter from the host institution that states the terms and conditions of the
offer: dates of the activity, number of hours (if applicable), field or subject,
amount of compensation, and description of activity.
- A letter from the UCSB department
that sponsors the J-1 scholar that is signed by the Chair/Director recommending
such activity and explains how it would enhance the J-1 exchange visitor’s program.
The Responsible Officer for the J program in OISS will write a letter authorizing
the activity and payment and give it to the scholar to present to the host institution.
Once the letter has been obtained the scholar can begin the activity.
