Instructions for Mexican TN Application & Extension Process
In order to obtain the TN category, the applicant who is a citizen of Mexico must
submit the following the a U.S. Consulate/Embassy abroad:
- Proof of Mexican nationality. This could be in the form of a photocopy of a short
or long form Mexican birth certificate; Mexican passport; or certificate of Mexican
naturalization.
- Letter from UCSB department. A letter following the example will document that the position falls under one of the
TN listed categories and that it is a temporary appointment requiring a University degree.
- Evidence of the required degree. A copy of the degree document, and translation where necessary.
- Valid passport for applicant and accompanying family members. If family members
will accompany the TN, they will need the TD visa(s). These can be obtained along
with the applicant's TN by providing the passport(s) and evidence of relationship
to the TN applicant, such as marriage certificate or birth certificate(s) and translations
where necessary.
Please check with the U.S. Consulate well in advance of the U.S. entry date to set
any required appointments and to obtain the instructions and forms necessary - in
addition to those mentioned above - for the visa application(s).
Once the person has entered the U.S. and obtained the I-94 admission/departure card
indicating the TN status, this will need to be shown to the UCSB department payroll
person to enable the visitor to be placed on UCSB's payroll.
TN Mexico - ADDING OR CHANGING EMPLOYERS
After the first issuance of the TN status through the Mexican U.S. consular office,
and while the TN employee is inside the U.S., the employer can be changed or a new
employer added through petition to the Nebraska Service Center. The documentary
evidence would be as indicated for the initial application:
- Proof of Mexican nationality
- Letter from new or additional employer (like the initial letter provided for theTN)
- Photocopy evidence of the required degree
- I-129 petition signed by new/additional employer (for UCSB, OISS will complete this
form - please speak with Tanya Plant, x2354. Please provide the following data TN data sheet).
- Check for $320.00 payable to U.S. Citizenship & Immigration Services
TN Mexico EXTENSION PROCEDURE
After the first issuance of the TN status through the Mexican U.S. consular office,
and while the TN employee is inside the U.S., we may extend the employment in increments
of one year at a time, through the same petition process outlined above, but with
the letter from the continuing employer.
If there are TD dependents who will also continue to stay inside the U.S. with the
TN applicant, an additional petition form I-539 will need to be provided, with an additional check for $300.00. NOTE: One form and
one fee will cover all the TD applicants. It is also possible to extend the stay
through a new application for new TN/TD visa(s) by application in person again to
the U.S. Consulate/Embassy abroad.
